McClatchy reporters Marisa Taylor and Kevin Hall have a new story out on additional potential Hatch Act violations by the Commerce and Treasury Departments. Most of us are familiar with the hearings that Rep. Henry Waxman has chaired for the House Oversight Committees investigation of the General Service Administration (GSA) and the powerpoint presentation GSA Adminstrator Lolita Doan presented to agency staff and her remark about helping GOP candidates. Taylor and Hall discovered:
Top Commerce and Treasury Departments officials appeared with Republican candidates and doled out millions in federal money in battleground congressional districts and states after receiving White House political briefings detailing GOP election strategy. commentary :: :: :: buzz-it!
Another agency, the Office of Special Counsel, also investigated GSA's Doan and found her actions in violation of the Hatch Act. While the administration has yet to exercise any of the administrative options availed them under the Act to discipline Doan, the Office of Special Counsel spokesman told McClatchy:
...the Hatch Act "is an important statute and it needs to be enforced," said James Mitchell, spokesman for the Office of Special Counsel. "One of the effects we hope our investigations will have is to deter violations during the upcoming election cycle." Much more to be read in the article, including the number of agencies now under investigation by Waxman's Committee. If you can think of other examples of violations after reading the article, please add them in the comments.
