ePluribus Media at YK07: As Seen on CAN TV!

by rcs1

originally posted Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 04:24:52 PM EST -- but it scrolled off too danged fast, so I resurfaced it...cho

One of the extracurricular activities we undertook at YearlyKos 2007 was a trip to Green Street and the Chicago Access Network studios, a production facility for the area's five-channel public access television network. We learned a great deal about their citizen programming as well as their outreach to at-risk youth. We also spent an interesting half-hour talking about citizen journalism (and lots of other stuff) with Frank Avila, a noted trial lawyer and host of CAN TV's "Issue Forum."

Kay Shepherd is awesome!  As of course is Ilona and Tanya!

You are all so knowledgeable and poised.  Excellent.

Here's a little story behind the story: Kay and Tanya tried late Friday afternoon to talk me into going to do this interview Friday evening... I looked and felt like hell (in t-shirt, needed shave, probably with bags under my eyes) so I turned 'em down on their offer to tag along.

They had to hustle from the Netroots Candidate Forum up on the 4th level of McCormick Place to the CAN TV studios to get there by ther reserved studio time, and I'm sure it was a challenge.

that I will ever watch the video!  BTW, I know you hadn't slept much the night before but you looked just as presentable as the rest of us ;-)

you might not want to watch... All three of you were amazing.  You are on top of your stuff about us.  Kay is awesome with her deep knowledge about the internet, journalism, the uses of technology, poised and perfect.  And Ilona, well, wow, what can one say except that she is able to articulate her cause and issue with such clarity...

All three of you were excellent.  And wander, you would have been too, but the poor interviewer already was so outshone by our three stars, you would have sunk him into the firmament.  (Is that a word?)

I remember Kay saying she didn't mind doing the show because it was only going to air on local public access cable TV -- and here she is posting a link to the video for all the world!

I guess I've just become too darn shy... besides, Cho was right, three stars were plenty for that interviewer to handle!  :-)

Well, other than that it should be obvious why I do print instead of TV -- or ought to, when I've had as little sleep as I'd had here -- it turned out to be a good group effort (and potentially a good example of what we might do with similar opportunities in the future). Each of us were able to speak to a different facet of the organization, and the host had some really interesting nonstandard questions. It ended up being a fun experience even though I'd ACTIVELY been dreading it earlier.

And hey, Tanya thought she was too shy before we got there!

I thought you were all awesome, and I know wanderindiana would have been the total frosting on the cake!  Shy often makes for the best presenters -- because if they can get over that initial hiccup, their authenticity and geniune-ness can't be beat -- It's so clear that they are not spin and smoothie ad stuff!

So next time, wanderindiana, look out!

...am I. Kay thanks for posting this!

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone who's already chimed in. Felt we were able to add thoughtful and informative comments to just about any topic Frank threw out at us (he was great fun). ^5's all around on a job well done. Posted a few reflections on the experience today.

Sure enjoyed seeing everyone in Chicago (and the JTM crew in DC, too)!
