Well, according to a study recently released by Democracy Corp (PDF) its the deafening sound of young people leaving the Republican Party.
This study shows that there is a not just a "shift," but a wave:
A major, multi-mode survey of America's young people recently conducted by Democracy Corps shows young people profoundly alienated from the Republican Party and poised to deliver a significant majority to the Democratic nominee for President in 2008. This should spell good news for Democrats, if they take the time to understand:

Young people care about global warming, and they care about the war in Iraq, but mostly ... they care about themselves and their economic and social situation. How this will parlay into votes for the Democrats will depend entirely on how well they can engage this demographic and addresses this "most important issue."
everybody look what's goin down It is also important to note that the large Democratic margin is driven, in part, by the diversity of this generation. The dynamic is slowly changing in the political landscape. The "diversity" generation has arrived and will bring with it the winds of change ... whether we are ready for it or not.
