Beauty for our souls: standing up to the big and strong

by rcs1

Thanks Silence!

I've been busy at work (and will probably stay busy for a while yet) but over the weekend I saw something fairly inspirational: a bullock's oriole, a brightly colored but fairly small bird, entered a colony of much larger black-crowned night herons, and harassed and harassed and nipped a heron, and ultimately, the heron flew away.

Ouch!
A black-crowned night heron issues a startled squawk after being nipped by a bullock's oriole
the oriole can be seen making its getaway in the background.
We're probably not going to stop the war this week, and probably not next week either. But like this oriole, if we keep pecking away, we've got a good chance of eventual success.

They are sorely needed given everything that is happening lately.

When you first started posting your photos, I was so discouraged by my humble attempts... now I look at them as a model to aspire to!

Thank you again.

Work looks to keep me exceedingly busy for another few weeks. Hopefully I'll get a chance to contribute more again after that.

These guys are a little more colorful than the average variety of sparrow I see more frequently.  A few cardinals every now and then add a splash of red but they don't come around as often since Spring has arrived.

Orioles like to hang out by water, and so you'll find them near lakes, rivers, and largish streams. In the east, you'll see the similar-looking Baltimore Oriole instead of the Bullock's Oriole I posted a photo of.

I'll do that the next time I am in an area near water.  Unfortunately I don't get outdoors as much as I once did and miss a lot of the simple beauty of nature that can only be found there.

I saw your Iran commentary yesterday, but was too busy to read it, I came back and couldn't find it...did you move it somewhere? Would love to read it now...
