My trip to Wisconsin

by rcs1

As mentioned in my March News and Notes, I was invited to Wisconsin to talk about Citizen Journalism.

First kudos to Susie Dow for the brochure from last year's YearlyKos and Roxy's updating it with one of the more recent ePluribus Media blogads. And wanderindiana answered a last minute desperation call for a solid and thorough proofread!

When I picked up my registration packet, I was thrilled to see our brochure tucked in the pocket, looking as if it had been designed to coordinate with the folder and the AP Editors agenda materials. What a delightfully happy happenstance!

So thanks again to Susie, Roxy and wanderindiana for the design, writing and proofreading work. Susie Dow also put together this year's lanyard and ePluribus Media "press badge." I thought we looked pretty spiffy!

citizen journalism :: :: :: buzz-it!
Also many, many, many thanks to the kind folks in Wisconsin who invited me and helped make sure I got there safe and sound. It was their annual meeting for their professional group, their sessions with their proprietary materials. They were gracious in letting me sit in.

Quick Updates
I was able to attend two sessions and then do my own. It was extraordinarily impressive how seriously these writers, editors, photojournalists take the blogosphere and its newsgathers-to-readers information flow. They are moving quickly from the old one-to-many view of news desemination to the many-to-many which so characterizes the internet world.

The first session covered how newspapers are striving to merge the work of their journalists with the submissions of their readers. Many of the issues we deal with daily at ePluribus Media are some of the same ones that they face... reliability of the data, motivations of the contributors, getting submissions etc.

The second session I attended was a tool geek's heaven. My Better Half has been doing video, audio and stills for his community news blog and it was startling to see how some of the same tools he is using are being used by the pros as their "bottom end" approach. Still, there are many more cameras, audio recorders, mikes, and so forth to drool over. I have now added "shotgun mike" and harddrive digital video camera to his Santa's wish list.

The Keynote Slide Deck

As a test, I saved my powerpoint slide show out as a web page, so if you would like to see it -- just click this link to display it in a separate window Cho's Slides

Or if your browser blocks jscript, jump to this link:Alternative for Cho's slides.

Not too sure how it will work for all browsers...

What struck me the most in talking to the reporters and editors attending is how committed they are to their First Amendment responsibilities.

It was all underscored by the terrible tragedy of a Racine area, Kenosha County Sheriff's deputy, shot and killed when he pulled a driver over, the night before the meeting. Several of those attending had been up late, literally in a "stop the presses" moment, making room on their respective front pages for the news.

Display:
and representing ePM there.  Well, I'm sure.

I'm glad to see that EPIC scenario was worthy enough to paint across their mindscapes.  The power of such a thing is immense, important enough to bring to the attention of such a 'users group'.  And certainly whose ramifications cannot all be foreseen.

I guess the invitation stands as a measure of how ePM was received, any personal glimpses?

Gee, I was waiting to see a picture of you at the podium. Won't your "better half" oblige?

could you click on the last one with our lady sleuth to see if she launches into her audio and animation?

I have not tried the powerpoint htm file conversion before and would like feedback on if it works for you.

Works fine for me in IE 6.something.

She doesn't launch in either of the two versions you provided above.

Yes, I could see it. Actually the eighth slide had been blocked and I had to OK microsoft to let me go for it after I disregarded a warning. Anyway, after watching it I went to the store, thinking I want a hat like that. But, alas it was all T-shirts.

And yes, boy, I would love a hat like that!

the last paragraph calls to mind; serious, touching and potent.

Thanks, Cho. It's good to know that there's still "tradition" in the media and the world of professional journalism.

And that you enjoyed yourself.

I'd be happy to hear more - what sorts of questions were you asked by those you encountered?

Thanks for taking this on and for doing such a fine job for US.  Like anything else, you can have a great message but a lousy delivery will drown its value pdq.  Thank you for all the prep time and personal time away from home,BH and the pooties and for delivering our message with such expertise.  We are very fortunate to have Ms. Cho.  In our short history, the personalities may come and go, but day  in and day out down in the engine room is Cho.

but gotta disagree... we's got US... a whole bunch of us, who have been steady, working hard day in and day out...I started the list but it was getting so long...so very long with all the names of folks who just keep doing, digging, researching, writing -- ahem, ms. ford -- sending out press releases, contacting journos, writing stellar series on PTSD... and on and on and on.

Youse guys are the best!
