Mothers Day - Discussion

Vivian Pettyjohn brings a wonderful essay in celebration of Mothers and Mothers Day. Read her essay on the ePluribus Media Journal and then join us back here for a discussion.

The history of "Mothers Day" has its roots in Ancient Greece, where the "Mother of all Gods" Rhea was honored with a Springtime celebration.

"Mothering Day" became a tradition in Britain in the 1600's.

But Mother's Day as we know it in the United States is more than just a "Hallmark Moment."

In 1870, Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament. From Wikipedia

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the
anvil at the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and
commemorate the dead. Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as
to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...
