Interview with Dr. Donald Shields - Discussion

by rcs1

Originally posted Fri Apr 27, 2007 at 10:55:48 AM CST - bumped. --wander

Recently, ePluribus Media was afforded the opportunity for an email interview with Dr. Donald Shields ... yes, the Dr. Shields of the now-famous ongoing study about the Political Profiling of Elected Democratic Officials referenced by Paul Krugman, Sen. Durbin, and even Steven Colbert.

As Dr. Shields and others have indicated, there's some confusion about what Shields' work traces. It's the publicity as generated by Department of Justice investigations initiated by the 93 U.S. Attorney offices. And so Dr. Shields answered questions about the basis of the study, explaining his methodology as he addressed the accusations of his critics and updated us on the progress he is making with the on-going study.

A big tip of the hat to wanderindiana for reminding us to link to the -- Interview with Dr. Donald Shields.

Post additional questions you may have for him in the comments.

as a clearer and direct invitation for submission of questions by the public?

This is actually the sort of idea I imagined we'd develop formally someday.  Glad you did something about it ;-)  Why not now?

If we have a clear deadline for submission of questions, it gives people time for thoughtful reconsideration of issues hashed through during the interim and to present questions within the imagined deadline.

Sounds like ePluribusMedia to me!

I would like to know if Dr. Shields has been in communication with any House or Senate committees currently investigating the Department of Justice. I'm sure he would not be at liberty to discuss the nature of any conversations he may have had, but it would be reassuring to know that his work is indeed helping to end the politicization at the Department of Justice.

It would also be fascinating to see a breakdown of cases in the voting rights section done in such a manner as the U.S. Attorney prosecutions... would Dr. Shields think that might be an interesting database project, or are too few cases opened each year to be statistically significant?

This morning (May 21, 2006), it is cited in New York Times editorial.
This understanding has badly broken down. It is now clear that United States attorneys were pressured to act in the interests of the Republican Party, and lost their job if they failed to do so. The firing offenses of the nine prosecutors who were purged last year were that they would not indict Democrats, they investigated important Republicans, or they would not try to suppress the votes of Democratic-leaning groups with baseless election fraud cases. The degree of partisanship in the department is shocking. A study by two professors, Donald Shields of the University of Missouri at St. Louis and John Cragan of Illinois State University, found that the Bush Justice Department has investigated Democratic officeholders and office seekers about four times as often as Republican ones.
