One of the things that interests me the most about the tubes is the ability they provide for us academics to move outside of our "ivied walls" into what Brad DeLong of U Cal/Berkeley calls the "invisible college."
So, taking it to the other side, in planning a conference to be held at New York City College of Technology on May 3, 2008, we are deliberately inviting people from beyond academia to come in and join in the discussion. What follows below the fold is a Call For Papers (CFP) for the conference. We are looking for people to organize panels or to submit papers (ones that can be read aloud in about 15 minutes) that we will place on panels. If you are interested, contact us through the email address in the CFP: commentary :: :: :: buzz-it!
Call For Papers
Race and New Media A Conference
New York City College of Technology We are interested in papers that deal with any aspect of the relationship between "race" and "new media." We're interested in questions like the following: does race work differently in the "new" media than it did in the "old" media? Network news, for instance, was widely derided as a nearly diversity-free zone. Is the blogosphere different? How do video games, blogs, chat rooms, and other forms of "new" media and "digital" or "virtual" spaces construct or reflect notions of race? What kinds of "new" identities and/or communities exist in these "new" digital spaces? How is new media being used to make connections, to empower communities, and/or to control, colonize, or dominate them? In other words, are there digital forms of "cultural" imperialism? Feel free to propose papers on any of these topics, or to invent your own!
