Poppy Days: Dates, Drives, and Donations

by rcs1

As we move through National Military Appreciation Month which includes Loyalty Day (1st), VE Day (8th), Military Spouse Day (12th), Armed Forces Day (20th), National Maritime Day (22th) and Memorial Day (29th) -- and actually Mother's Day (14th), too -- I invite you to 'pin a poppy on' during Poppy Days in remembrance of our lost veterans.

Resources on the large variety of ways you can join together with the nation and help out our veterans and their families below the fold. And if you'd like a bit more history and poetry, please see the companion piece, Poppy Days: Remembering Our Veterans' Sacrifices.

commentary :: :: :: buzz-it!
From the Great Poems of the World War: Electronic Edition, W. D. Eaton:

POPPIES:

CAPT. JOHN MILLS HANSON, F.A.
IN The Stars And Stripes, A.E.F., France

POPPIES in the wheat fields on the pleasant hills of France,
Reddening in the summer breeze that bids them nod and dance;
Over them the skylark sings his lilting, liquid tune--
Poppies in the wheat fields, and all the world in June.

Poppies in the wheat fields on the road to Monthiers--
Hark, the spiteful rattle where the masked machine guns play!
Over them the shrapnel's song greets the summer morn--
Poppies in the wheat fields--but, ah, the fields are torn.

See the stalwart Yankee lads, never ones to blench,
Poppies in their helmets as they clear the shallow trench,
Leaping down the furrows with eager, boyish tread
Through the poppied wheat field to the flaming woods ahead.

Poppies in the wheat fields as sinks the summer sun,
Broken, bruised and trampled--but the bitter day is won;
Yonder in the woodland where the flashing rifles shine,
With their poppies in their helmets, the front files hold the line,

Poppies in the wheat fields; how' still beside them lie
Scattered forms that stir not when the star shells burst on high;
Gently bending o'er them beneath the moon's soft glance,
Poppies of the wheat fields on the ransomed hills of France

The post welcomes donations, (708) 246-5759.

Please share your own local Poppy Days events in comments.

You may wish to find your local American Legion office and ask when this event will take place in your own neighborhood. I'll close the list on what may be the perfect little poem, written by one of the poppy makers at Yountville's [CA] Veterans Home:

A scrap of blood red paper,
A twist of green and black:
We make these poppies in memory,
Of the men who never came back

Far from home and loved ones,
They sleep in foreign lands;
So wear this poppy proudly,
Remembering for whom it stands.

I was working in London many years ago and saw people buying the poppy pins from street corner vendors...

Felt sheepish in my ignorance, but curiosity got the better of me and I asked my British colleagues about the tradition.

Was touched by how many of the people on the streets and in the office buildings were wearing the poppies.

Same comment as I put on your diary on kos -- gave it a recommend and hope others will too, it's here: Poppy Day

by Cho on Sat May 06, 2006 at 07:38:05 PM EST

During my years as a flight attendant, I had the opportunity to fly international out of JFK and out of Miami. Out of all of my routine journeys overseas during that period of time, I miss my London trips the most. Absolutely love that city, and its people. Since my parents are from Hungary, I absolutely adore Budapest, too; but, London is right up there, too, amongst my most beloved of cities.

Thanks so much for sharing this personal experience, Cho.

Just like you, I have to admit that before I stumbled across this reminder that Poppy Days is upon us and began researching to find out what it means to our veterans organizations, I had no idea what a poignant and beautiful tradition it is. I remember seeing the poppies over the years (my father always brought them home for us, a memory that returned to me as I was putting the diary together).

Thanks, again, ePluribus Media, for the front page real estate, too. You guys know how to show others how supporting the troops its done. Pure class...

is a big celebration in Columbia.  They have the Salute to Veterans.  The key events are the Airshow on Saturday and Sunday.  Monday there is a big parade downtown followed by a Military Cermemony at the courthouse.

I have some wonderful memories from a few years back while my husband and I were on a cross-country camping trek (well, two night camping...one night in a hotel; we didn't want to test ourselves that much :o)

We were in Pocatello, ID; had spent a night there on the Sunday of Memorial Day wknd. As we were heading out of town the next day, Memorial Day, we wanted to stop and observe the holiday. We'd been asking folks since the day before, "Where's your Memorial's Day gathering?" I guess we weren't asking the right people, because no one could tell us exactly. Darn campers!

On Monday morning, as we were heading out of town a bit discouraged, my husband saw a conga line of Harleys crossing an intersection a couple of blocks down the street from where we were. There must have been nearly 30. He said, "Let's follow them!" And sure enough, they took us to Memorial Park where we spent a memorable hour or so observing the day with all of the people assembled there, arriving just in time for the start of the ceremonies. One of my favorite 'camping' memories.

P.S. Thanks for sharing that link; love the flash animation they have on the site. It looks like Columbia does it up real good! :o)

Oh man...do I have books. And I'll happily send them along. What a great idea too.

by susie dow on Sun May 07, 2006 at 02:43:14 AM EST
The Books for Soldiers program is a perfect fit for those of us who love to read and write, isn't it? My husband and I have sent out two waves of books to the troops -- and it's getting time to go back through out library and do some more spring thinning out.

That program is great for people who also don't have a lot of money; but, still want to contribute in some way. If they have old books laying around they no longer need, chances are there's a soldier out there that would love to take them off their hands! Added bonus: since you get to match your books with wish lists posted by the troops, you know the person requesting the books really wants the book that you're sending them.

Another thing I really like about this type of giving is that you're sending them something they can see, touch, read, remember.

That is so satisfying. Cheers, Susie!
