That Was the Month That Was

During April, several schools of journalism (among others) have visited our tools for citizen journalism -- such as the collections of interviewing tips, legal requirements for using recorded information, plagiarism, and so forth in our Citizen Journalism folder and our Toolbox on the Community site.

Also on the Community site, Wmmtriallawyer, Welshman, and wanderindiana all analyzed the evolving direction of Blogtopia (Yes! skippy coined that phrase).

In April we again had over 12,000 visitors, in fact our second highest month ever!  Next month we will probably top 100,000 visitors overall.

Exhibit Move in: Friday, June 9th (9:00 am – 1pm)
Exhibits open: Friday, June 9th 1pm - 5:30p

Sunday, June 11th 9:30 – 5:30
Exhibit Move Out, Sunday, June 11th 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm.
We are most concerned with filling the Friday and Saturday afternoon hours. A separate mail message to coordinate table times will be going out to those of you who expressed interest in helping.

Rba's "Un-News" roundup
Tasty appetizers! Rba has an ongoing daily "Un-News" thread on the Community where folks can post links and snippets of articles and news that are important, but somehow slipped beneath the radar. Check out what he is doing and post your links and news. His commentaries go up at the beginning of each day.

Welshman's News Agency
As a main course, Welshman's focusing on a different type of news digging than we've been doing. His explanation and call for volunteers is here

Brian Keeler's run for NY State Senate
As a side dish, if you haven't heard, Nybri is running for state senate in New York. He sent us this announcement to include in the newsletter with his request for help.

"After clacking away at the keyboard for ePluribus Media, Political Cortex and DailyKos, NYBri, one of our founders, has decided to leave behind his trusty mac and make his way to the front lines of the real battle...and run for the New York State Senate."
Visit Keeler2006.com, and join the campaign. He's looking for tech help, volunteers, contributions and plain old ePM support.

Many of you researchers and writers, fact checkers, proofreaders and copyeditors have been working on two stories that we hope will be on the Journal in May.
  • The first piece in Susie Dow's Missing Man series that she's been researching for over a year
  • The first report investigation into the internet threads that Luaptifer and txj have been following, also for over a year
Finally, if you like what we've been doing, don't be shy about volunteering to help with YearlyKos, the timelines, editing, fact-checking, creating graphics for stories, writing book reviews, or just participating in the Community site by posting commentaries or comments. And of course, consider donating to keep the servers humming. If you have a tip, please submit it to leads@epluribusmedia.org.

If you have a story you'd like to submit for publication as an ePluribus Media article in the Journal (as opposed to posting as a commentary on Community), submit it to editors@epluribusmedia.org. For information and some guidelines, check out the submissions guidelines.

And don't forget, if you have any book buying planned, consider Powell's. Clicking through the Powell's bookstore ad at the bottom of the home page on the ePMedia Community site gives us 7.5%!

You make the "us" in ePluribus Media a reality.

Decided to sqeeze it in, no matter how much I might have to pay for it later. :o) I'd love to help man the ePluribus Media table or pitch in other ways. Just made the decision last night, and haven't gotten around yet to contacting anyone here via email on this. Can't wait to meet some of you!

P.S. This news digest for May is incredible. Great and amazing scope and breadth of work. All I can say is WOW!

Thank you!

Right now, even though I won't be attending, I'm coordinating the table volunteers. I'm sending an email with the details...

My wife is still teaching that first week of June, and the logistics of getting out to Vegas... next to impossible. But if we ever have a Chicago Meetup... that's another story!

I was hoping the convention would be in Chicago, too...since I'm out here in Rockford (grew up in Oak Forest; lived in the Lakeview area on Belmont and Sheridan in the former Belmont Hotel for years before moving out here 6 years ago). Greetings, neighbor!

Btw, do you remember when dKos had the venue poll early on? Didn't Chicago win, but turned out to be too expensive? I was kicking the dirt! :o) I was bordering on not being able to go myself, but a number of things finally swayed me.

Friday afternoon's Iraq Veterans panel has people on it that I'm desperate to hear speak. One is Abbie Picket, a veteran who's from Madison, WI who has an incredible story that I'm familiar with from press reports. I actually have her on my list of 'locals' (Madison only being a bit over an hour away from where I live) I'd planned to get in touch with this summer seeking an interview. I'm hoping to be able to introduce myself and maybe set that up with her (fingers crossed).

I also have been asked to take part in the YearlyKos Book Project; and I just can't say no to that opportunity. Above all of that it's going to be a great opportunity to meet with so many of the people that I've enjoyed chatting with online these past couple of years. Helping out ePMedia is the icing on the cake. So, I'm excited about it all...

Anyway, I just sent an email out your way to let you know the times I'm available to man the booth, etc. My broadband service has advised that they're doing maintenance this week and that email will be down here and there. They weren't kidding; it's been erratic as heck (and I'm pretty snail-like sometimes in replying all on my own without InsightBB's help on this!) Let me know if it hasn't arrived...

Ah...your wife must be so happy as summer approaches! My husband's immediate family accounts for 3 wonderful teachers; I absolutely admire those in that profession. Cheers to her. And you, too!

I grew up in the same area...stomping grounds were from Orland Park in the west/northwest to Lansing and Calumet City in the east/southeast, and about all points inbetween. And in the summer of '88, the first year Wrigley Field had lights, I knew some people who were living on Sheffield a half block to the south... spent a few hot August nights in the Lakeview neighborhood.

And you are absolutely right about Chicago winning the vote but losing out to Vegas for other reasons...

No sign of your mail yet, but I'll keep an eye out.  And I'm still holding out hope for a miracle...

Frankly, it's starting to get on my nerves. Insight informed us earlier in the week that there might be occassional difficulties, but this is getting nuts. Broadband service was down for a few hours this afternoon and email still not getting through. My apologies, wander...

I'll re-send; but, in case that doesn't arrive (again...argh), here's what I can commit to at the moment for ePMedia's table:

#Friday#
9-12 (for set-up if you need me)
4:15-5:30

#Saturday#
11-12:30
2:30-4

Not sure yet what time I'm leaving on Sunday, but I might be available to help out a bit then, too.
