Breaking News: Delay won't seek re-election

by rcs1

[editor's note, by rba] [Bumped, 9:30 PST]

From the Houston Chronicle. "Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texan touched by a lobbying scandal that ensnared some of his former top aides and cost the congressman his leadership post, won't seek re-election to Congress, a Republican official said today.

DeLay was expected to disclose the plans Tuesday, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because DeLay had not publicly disclosed his plans."

commentary :: :: :: buzz-it!
DeLay will leave his seat and Congress by the end of May.

I wonder if yesterday's Chronicle story was the final blow. Chronicle wrote that Ed Buckham, a former aide turn lobbiest, was paid $770,000 for lobbying work.

The Chronicle found:

Buckham traded on his close ties to both DeLay and his fundraising organization on at least two occasions to land clients who were trying to get personal time with DeLay.
One of Buckham client was Questerra Corp. of Charlottesville, Va.

In April 2005, AP wrote that Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle dropped the charges against Questerra Corp, which was one of the 8 original companies that were indicted for contributing soft money to DeLay's TRMPAC. Earle and Questerra came up with a plea deal, Earle would drop the charges if Questerra agrees to cooperate with Earle's investigation.

According to the Chronicle:

Questerra was officially launched in November 2001 when Timothy W. Milovich was named its president. Milovich, who lives near Tyler, is a nationally known computer expert who had worked with EDS and Perot Systems and served as a consultant with Informix, Xerox and Stamps.com.

The same month, Milovich donated $7,500 to DeLay's leadership committee, Americans for a Republican Majority. He made the donation one day so he could play golf the next at a DeLay fundraiser in Orlando, Fla.

Another Buckham client happens to be linked to DeLay and Duke Cunningham.

From 2002 through last year, Group W Advisers paid Buckham's company $630,000 to seek government contracts and earmarks in defense appropriations bills. Group W was owned by Brent Wilkes of San Diego and his family-owned group of defense contractors: ADCS Inc. and PerfectWave Technologies LLC., a company marketing speech recognition technology to the Department of Defense. Buckham became the lobbyist for Wilkes' interests effective on April 1, 2002.

Within two weeks, Wilkes, his executives and ADCS donated $45,000 to ARMPAC so one of their executives could play golf with DeLay, FEC records show.

Funny, it wasn't so long ago that DeLay was gloating about his win in the primary and thanking the voters.

"I have always placed my faith in the voters, and today's vote shows they have placed their full faith in me,"
DeLay's Democratic opponent, Nick Lampson said after DeLay's victory:
I'm looking forward to that headline on November 8th: 'No Further DeLay.'"

Well Lampson, wait no long, with No Futher DeLay, Tommy boy dropped out. The King is dead, long live the king.

Let him share the title with today's Pombo entry.  And let him share the following graphic, lifted from Pombo's House Resources website.  There, it's intended to characterized opponents of ANWR drilling.

Interview @ Time online (says "Web Exclusive").  Longish, answers many questions.  Video to be released in the morning.

...before summer.  He's changing his legal residence to Alexandria, VA, so he has to give up the seat.  Talk about lame!

In that case, there'll be a Special Election before the general election in November.  If I understand correctly, the Governor has some discretion in exactly when/how it proceeds.

Meanwhile, I've sprinkled the "crybaby" pic in several high traffic locations, so the Resources webmaster is likely to notice.

Who would have thought there'd be a breaking news bulletin interrupting our local Houston channel announcing DeLay was stepping down....made me giggle
like a little girl!

I think to myself "the bigger they are, the harder they fall".... I hope to hell he gets indicted again!  And the lame story last night was that DeLay was going to concentrate on his charity for foster children.....please spare me!

Make no mistake...this is a biggy...a really big biggy. I keep thinking maybe it involves his daughter or wife cause bugmen don't give up very easily...and this bugmen has a pretty tough skin.

  1.  Rove told him to step down because he was going to lose the seat for the Republicans.  Nick Lampham (sp?) will have a tougher time beating someone not connected to Delay.
  2.  Moving to Virginia?  "K-Street lobbyist here I come!"  Maybe he'll go to work for Ashcroft's firm.

probably be hearing he's leaving to spend more time with his attorneys.  Two former Delay aides have now plead guilty in the Abramoff investigation and are 'cooperating' with feds.  Delay didn't take one for the party.

My mom calls this pig "The Bugman from Sugarland". You really can't know how funny that is until you hear it in a Southern drawl.
