Election 2006 follow up: Team Allen, best of the worst

by rcs1

"The people of Virginia, who I always call the owners of the government, they have spoken. And I respect their decision." Sen. George Allen

On Nov. 9th, with humble deference to Jesus and Jefferson, VA Sen. George Allen publicly conceded his seat and Republican control of the 110th Congress. After thanking his family and team, Allen offered up some hope with a forward-looking and hackneyed simile about strong winds and deep-rooted trees, spoken in soft tones that echoed dissonantly after arguably the year's most heated electioneering firefight.

Just three days earlier Virginia election officials had decided to contact the U.S Department of Justice and seek advice -- action now seemingly disremembered by federal lawmakers and enforcers alike -- after a weekend spate of voter harassment complaints spilled over into Monday.

Neither candidate has been officially implicated. However, as reported HERE on election night, Allen's team roster is hardly a proud testimonial to enlightened governance, bristling instead with the latest and greatest election law benders and breakers, the lavishly paid closers of anointed up and comers, and career flesh pressers not yet ready to turn lobbyist.

Though largely unknown beyond Capitol Hill, their tradecraft exemplars are nonetheless cultural icons, persistent welts left not only on opposition candidates but language itself: "swiftboating;" "flip-flopping;" "ratfucking."

This is Team Allen.

commentary :: :: :: buzz-it!
As stated above, no evidence directly links the alleged voter suppression to either Allen or his opponent senator-elect Jim Webb (D).

But even a cursory glance at Allen's 2006 campaign strategists reveals some brass-knuckle types, GOP operatives whose storied careers are practically field manuals for creatively subverting the democratic process. And despite decades of accusations, and a felony conviction or three, each new cycle finds their re-branded companies atop recipient lists of GOP cash.

The FBI has refused to confirm or deny the existence of its investigation in Virginia, despite Bureau spokesman Stephen Kodak's election day statement that agents were "reviewing reports that some voters received telephone calls directing them to the wrong polling places or discouraging them from voting." Similarly, the DoJ has declined comment.

But according to Jean Jensen, Secretary of the VA Board of Elections, it was the Justice Dept. who recommended the board issue their initial release stating that federal law enforcement had begun an investigation in VA. And the DoJ advised her to call the FBI.

As it turned out, a call proved unnecessary. An FBI special agent contacted Jensen first, having been alerted instead directly by the DoJ, as she was preparing the board's statement to the press.

In all, Jensen estimates that VA election officials throughout the commonwealth received about 20 complaints during the weekend prior to the election. When additional incidents emerged on Monday morning, Jensen and the board decided to report the allegations to federal authorities.

TEAM ALLEN

This interactive graphic is an attempt to show the complex, overlapping network of "voter contact" companies and key players paid by "Friends of George Allen," the senator's principal campaign committee. Though the image may seem overly complicated, it is nonetheless a bare bones representation -- many more well-worn names were left out than included. For those who prefer raw data, a complete list of companies, names, and addresses is at the bottom of this story.

Here, are a few, hopefully, helpful pointers:

  • Pay close attention to addresses. Most, if not all of the companies shown, have claimed 2800 Shirilington Rd. Suite 900 or Suite 901 in Arlington, VA as their address.

  • Also, note the 2401 W. Behrend Dr. Suite 7 is an Arizona address used by the DCI Group and for some of its shell companies, e.g. GPS Ventures, FLS Connect, and Progress for America Voter Fund

  • Every company and person in this graphic has a direct business connection to the DCI Group. Members and associates of the DCI Group have repeatedly been caught push-polling and phone jamming for the better part of 3 decades. Note especially the ubiquitous Charles A. "Chip" Gately.

  • Nearly every company and person in this graphic played a central role in creating the Swift Boat Vets. For instance, Ray Allen, Jr.'s Creative Direct rec'd over $1M from SBVT, using the same VA address as DCI Group lobbyist and SBVT lead media consultant Chris LaCivita.

  • For this story, little was found about Randy Spradlin. However, his company America Direct rec'd more than $825K from the republican party during this campaign cycle.

Special thanks to wanderindiana and luaptifer for contributing to this story.

My Flash chops are coming around, although far from that of a pro. :-)

While my Flash is becoming passable, my html/css still sucks. I didn't use any UL tags because I've only recently started working with html "lists," and only because I needed it for Flash.

Flash will parse the li tag, after some fancy hand-waving. So I know that one now. But for bullets in scoop I use auto-format and the asterisk, and let it figure it out. :-)

and if you don't like, you can take them out!

Just didn't want to do it without checking first!

Good stuff.  This is great research.  Too bad the criminally neglegent media won't research or report anything.  You've got a pulitzer story here me thinks.

The funny thing is, what I posted just scratches the surface compared to what I have.

For instance:

  • although hardly any money changed hands, Allen used Campaign Solutions, aka Becki Donatelli, aka Swift Boat Vets, aka suspected computer hacker. Donatelli also just happens to be a former appointee of former Gov. Allen. And, she's Mrs. Frank J. Donatelli.

  • Frank J. Donatelli is the Executive Vice President and Director of Federal Public Affairs at McGuireWoods Consulting (their lobby shop), aka most well-connected lobbyist. George Allen worked as a partner at McGuireWoods LLP (their law firm) from '98-'00, in-between playing governor and playing senator.

  • About 1/3 of the companies mentioned in this story have the same reg'd agent, who just happens to be an attorney that works for McGuireWoods.

If you look fully at the names Allen had running his campaign, you'll see how badly the GOP wanted this one. Here's a few I still haven't mentioned:

  • Dick Wadhams: being called Karl Rove's "heir apparent"
  • Mary Matalin: enough said.
  • Scott Howell & Company: The man who brought SWVT to your TV, and the creative spirit behind "the Hitler Ad."
  • Ed Gillespie: senior communications advisor for Bush/Cheney in 2000, RNC Chairman from mid-2003 to early 2005, Florida recount freedom fighter (you have to be over 40 to get that one).

Smoke'n'Mirrors with a Shell Game?

Usually?!

Away with it.

Less frequently,

George W. Bush for President

It's all the same crew, with the Bu$h Dynasty, Inc. joined to the Grand Old transaction Processor.

txj, Nice job of drawing clear, straight lines among the worms hidden beneath those shells in such tangled mass.  It takes a village...of wandering excavators, great work WI!

Less than 30 minutes after cross-posting this story to Kos -- or, if you prefer, 20 minutes after I emailed some friends that I'd cross-posted it -- this page got the following zero minute duration visit, by following a link in the Kos version:
Domain Name
* sec.gov (United States Government)
IP Address
* 12.40.163.82 ? (SHEET METAL WORKERS INT)
ISP
* AT&T WorldNet Services

Location

  • Continent: North America
  • Country: United States
  • State: Maryland
  • City: Andrews Air Force Base

  1. Something in this story (on Kos) tripped a flag at the SEC (as opposed to the FEC)? Huh?

  2. The SEC -- or, I guess, a sheet metal worker -- monitors internet content out of Andrews Air Force Base? I say again, huh?

Isn't Christopher Cox head of the SEC? And why is Cox's name ringing a bell in my head, in relationship to this story?
