Here's my brief summary:
To be more accurate, the VRA is not up for renewal, but rather a few sections that were added in later years pertaining to minority language groups, and federal oversight of certain voting rules. These rules expire in 2007 (last renewed in 1982) and the big problem the House Reps have is with bilingual ballots, which threaten their very existance, somehow.
McAlpin (ProEnglish / NumbersUSA) testified before Sensenbrenner's committee in Nov 2005, then this letter dated Dec. 12, 2005 appeared on house.gov RSC which eventually turned into King (R-IA) letter with 56 signatures in Feb, 2006. This eventually became 79 signatures and led to the indefinate postponement of the VRA renewal. The only copy with signatures can be found on ProEnglish.org.
Still haven't found the letter with 79 signatures. Wish I knew the new 23 House Repubs that added on.
