If one's own agenda is paramount and truth will dissuade others from advancing what's most important, it's necessary to control what IS perceived as truth.  If that doesn't work, there's always brute force to those in power.

(...I didn't realize I was going this route as I started the comment but I'd a followup to our earlier exchange that you may not have seen in its tardiness) - it seems that National Interest is subordinate to Personal Interest whether the latter is driven by power, greed, my righteous 'morality', or the underlying motive to validate a fragile ego.  

It goes back to that 'faith' thing, I think.  Faith in my 'rightness' or my primacy or abuse of your faith to advance my goals.
